Doherty in jail drugs shocker

The Sun reports the shocking news today that banged-up Pete Doherty is still taking drugs. The Wormwood Scrubs resident is "clucking for" heroin. Front page news? The useless rocker repeatedly makes the headlines for his drug addiction and continual flouting of the law, but when does the "news value" of his sorry situation run out? He is no longer famous by association and his music career is a joke, so why does this junkie deserve column inches? Or blog posts for that matter...

Well, I agree with you that The Sun's reporting of stories like this is in poor taste. Doherty needs help - clearly - and it's a terrible shame that the monster he and, by the small means, the media have created have overshadowed his talent. He's an excellent songwriter, I think. His work with The Libertines was brilliant and his last album with Babyshambles too. I hope it's not too late for him!

And it's sad to see stories like this, from papers like The Sun, feeding our morbid fascination with death and celebrity (Britney Spears, for example) - on a downward spiral, most likely ending in self-destruction. (Did you see that photo shoot Lindsay Lohan did for the New Yorker? It recreated Marilyn Monroe's very last shoot before she died. I mean...)

Thanks for your thoughts San. It's easy to overlook the purity of talent folks like Doherty originally had -- you've reminded me that I did actually enjoy the stuff he did with The Libertines. But the papers play their role in morphing the real person into a caricature, so you almost forget the real reason they were on our radar to start with. I wish there was no demand for morbid details of celebrity's lives... then perhaps there would be no need to supply these stories. But which comes first, the supply or the demand?
